One way to keep the bead "upright", so the hole isn't visible, is to take a backstitch. After adding a bead, take a stitch back to where the thread first exited the fabric. Good luck! I found your suggestions very useful. I was specifically looking for information about whether it was best to add the beading before or after quilting and you have answered that for me. Thank you also for the library citations. I'll have to check these out in my local library.
