Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Blog Tour
Nov 12th, 2009 | Category: Publications
I am so excited that one of my block designs has been chosen for Quiltmaker’s Special Issue magazine featuring 100 blocks from today’s top designers.
My block is called Spring Snowflake. It was designed using papercut appliqué, as described in my book Sewflakes. Similar to making paper snowflakes, the blocks are designed by folding and cutting paper. What makes sewflakes unique is the use of a recognizable image as the foundation of the design. Spring Snowflake is made up of six tulips.

As a quilting teacher, I am often inspired by my students. I have taught this technique of Papercut Appliqué many, many times over the last few years and particularly enjoy witnessing the beautiful designs that are created by the class. Spring Snowflake was inspired by one such student. An award-winning quilter in her own right, Mary Light operates a long-arm quilting business in Shelburne, ON Canada. It is only fitting that she should receive this free copy of the magazine.
Spring Snowflake Quilt Project
Here is an idea for a quilt project to showcase your Spring Snowflake blocks. (Measurements are finished sizes and do not include seam allowance.)
- Make six 12″ Spring Snowflake blocks.
- Join them together with 2″-wide sashing strips and 2″ x 2″ cornerstones.
- Add 1/2″-wide accent strips.
- Appliqué 7 individual tulip motifs onto two 6″-wide horizontal border strips.
- Appliqué 10 individual tulip motifs onto two 6″-wide vertical border strips.
- Make four 6″ Half-square Triangle blocks.
- Sew appliquéd border strips and Half-square Triangle blocks onto the quilt.
Completed quilt measures 43″ x 57″.

Beautiful block! Thanks for being a part of this blog tour!
I love your block. The snow flake and tulip combination is inspired. I will look for your book since I love snow flakes.
I love tulips and being a former Minnesotan well what can I say about snowflakes.
Since I love snowflakes and tulips, I love your block
I love tulips, your block’s gorgeous, congrats to be in the 100!
Very pretty!
Gorgeous block and the quilt idea looks very pretty.
Lovely fresh block – thanks for sharing the quilt pattern.I love applique and will definately be making this quilt
Love the tulips!
Very pretty block! I love tulips.
Aha! Someone else who likes hexagons. Took me a long time to understand why I wasn’t a round peg nor a square hole. I’m a “hexagon”, and I love all things hexagon (except benzene rings in organic chemistry). What I would really love is to win a copy of your book, “Sewflakes”.
I’ll tell you what. This blog hopping tour is SEW much fun. I have met more new people I didn’t know existed and read more fun blogs. My poor firefox browser has so many tabs I have clicked on I have to use an arrow to see everything and I have had to leave it up all day and force myself to get something done in between browsing all these 100 Block Creators. You all are very worthy of being published and I am impressed.
Congratulations on being part of that. Your block is absolutely beautiful and I LOVE the name of your book. I am a snowflake fan.
I hope you have had a wonderful day
I think your tulip block is wonderful! I’m new to applique and have never heard of papercut applique. I will look for your book … I would love to learn how to do it. Thanks!
I love your block and your book! I purchased your book and have used it twice already! I would so love to win a copy of the magazine, please add my name to the drawing. Thanks for the chance.
I love seeing the block in a setting as you’ve shared! Congrats on your block being published…if I win, will you sign near your block in the magazine? Thanks!!!
The block is beautiful. Congrats on being included in the magazine of 100 blocks.
Love this block and the technique is intriguing. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Thanks for sharing your block with us. It is darling.
Your technique sounds intriguing.
I like your block and the quilt.
oh my goodness, I love your block. I think I have said that to 95% of you designers, but it’s so true! Thank you for the quiltpattern to go with it. I grew up around Seattle and every year around my birthday north of us there’s a huge Tulip Festival, oh I love it so. I am in Montana now and miss the tulips. This year there were two in my yard. They wern’t there the year before!
I love tulips – very pretty quilt
What a beautiful block! I had never considered putting ‘flakes’ into a Spring setting, but WOW! Congratulations!
I love your block. So much like spring. And the setting that you have shown are beautiful.
What a lovely block!
Here in Maine, it isn’t unusual to see some snow along with the earliest tulips. Spring flowers are such a joy, they remind us that after a long winter’s rest…..the ground is coming back to life. That quilt is just lovely that was made using this block!
Nice block
What a wonderful block! I hope to win a magazine.
I too love anything with tulips. The cutting idea of your work sounds intriguing, I’m going to check the local shops for it. Thanks for the stunning block.
I love your block…I love any quilt block with tulips! I wish I enjoyed applique, for I would make this in a minute. Who knows, if, along the way, I win a copy of this issue of the magazine, I may have the courage to try it….for now, I will try to track down a copy of your book at the library.
Love your block and the quilt layout. Very feminine. I can see this being made for some little girl who would just love it. Am anxious to give your method of applique a try.
Lynn Schumacher emailed: “I really, really love your block–your design is terrific! I have flagged this project and I’m pretty selective! I always have problems with applique cut-outs that are like the green portion….my sizing gets all messed up. Any tips? Would your snowflake book have ideas on how to do this? My cutouts are always larger than the outline on the block.”
Thanks, Lynn. My tip for appliquéing cutouts is to cut out the fabric as a single layer. While I fold paper to design my snowflake blocks, I never fold the fabric. If you make a freezer paper template of the leaves, you can iron that onto green fabric and trace around it. Remove the freezer paper and cut out leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Your sizing should be perfect that way. And yes, my Sewflakes book is all about how to do this!
Congrats on being included in the 100 Blocks magazine. I love your block and the quilt idea with the blocks. Love tulips! Please enter me into your give-a-way.
